Eric Deneyer passed away yesterday. He had been suffering from cancer for some time and was 55 years old. He leaves behind a wife and child. For 26 years, he ran the Brussels comic book specialty shop’t “B” hazard until the store had to move for financial reasons. A few years ago he ended up in the famous Beenhouwersstraat and founded there Expo 59 on.

Both shops were the only Brussels comic shops with a predominantly Dutch-language selection. All other shops in the capital aim for a French-speaking audience. Thanks to a new partner, there was more dynamism in the store with countless signing sessions and even an in-house artist, Alec Severin. In addition, Deneyer was regarded as a great comics expert with a pertinent opinion. He also expressed this in reviews he wrote for his own website and blog, and for a while also for Stripspeciaalzaak.be. He also occasionally updated us with comic news or gave additional information about news that we provided. He helped draftsmen with advice, including Charles Cambre for an album of Jump. And he was associated with it for a while Marc Sleen Museum and stomped the short-lived patronage society The Gang of the Black Stocking from the ground up to help finance projects.

Deneyer also stood his ground in the field of production. Under the label Enigma he gave, among other things Excalibur (Minck Oosterveer), Usagi Yojimbo (Stan Sakai), Kane (Paul Grist), L for Lloyd (David Lloyd) and Harry’s Magazine (Alec Severin) out. Of Under the Ink he published a nice artbook with the work of Severin. In addition, he printed many ex-libris for clients and he was also a comic book translator. In front of Slippery icea temporary imprint of publisher Casterman, he translated just about all comic strips. He made it a sport to use the term “glass of ice” in every album, including in his new translation of Andrew Franklins Looking black, the label’s best-selling album. He also translated some comics for Casterman and Dark Dragon Books.
