In Austria, a 28-year-old woman from the Netherlands died in a skiing accident. She fell during a descent from the Hintertux Glacier in Tyrol and broke through the safety net. Her 27-year-old Dutch girlfriend also fell and was seriously injured, Austrian media report.
In other falls in the area, at least three winter sports enthusiasts were seriously injured. One of them, a 55-year-old woman from Germany, fell on the same spot as the two Dutchmen. She was seriously injured and taken to hospital by rescue helicopter.
Slipped on ice
According to the Tiroler Tageszeitung, the fatal accident happened on a red piste of the Hintertux ski area. A steep section of the descent was frozen; the two Dutch women are said to have slipped on this.
The 28-year-old slid down about 100 meters, went through the safety net, flew about 20 meters through the air and then hit a tree. The woman was so seriously injured that help was of no avail.
Her 27-year-old friend fell at about the same time. She also slipped over the edge of the slope and was seriously injured. She was flown by rescue helicopter to the hospital in Kufstein. The woman was later transferred to a clinic in Innsbruck.
Later in the day, the rescue helicopter had to return to action on the glacier. A skier from Germany (56) had fallen on a red run and hit a board. According to the newspaper, he suffered serious injuries to one eye.
In another ski resort in the area, a 40-year-old skier slipped on a black run. He was also taken by helicopter to a hospital.

On the same day, a 62-year-old Dutch woman was also seriously injured after a collision with another winter sports enthusiast on the slopes. A 39-year-old Dutch winter sports enthusiast also died in the Zillertal ski area. He had collapsed while walking: according to Austrian media, there was no accident.
