THE surfer Brazilian Márcio Freire died this Thursday, 5, after suffering a water accident. At the age of 47, the athlete was in the waves of Nazaré, in Portugal, known for being one of the biggest in the world.

Márcio was on the beach in Nazaré, surfing casually, not in training or competition. The Brazilian suffered the accident on the descent of a wave. In Portugal time, at 16:16 (13:16 in Brasilia), the rescue alert was triggered.

According to local maritime authorities, Márcio was rescued by rescuers, but already suffering a cardiorespiratory arrest. Even with resuscitation maneuvers and the work of professionals, the Brazilian could not resist and died on the spot.

The surfer’s body was taken to the Legal Medicine Institute of Leiria and the Maritime Police’s psychology office is providing support to family members, according to the Portuguese press. According to the Portuguese authorities, Márcio was the first fatal victim in Nazaré. Previously, the Brazilians Pedro Scooby and Maya Gabeira already suffered serious accidents.

“Unfortunately, none of the life support maneuvers were successful, and death was declared on the spot”, said Mário Lopes Figueiredo, commander of the Captaincy of Nazaré, to Agencia Lusa.

Who was Márcio Freire?

Considered one of the pioneers in giant wave surfing, Márcio was 47 years old and is famous for being one of the Mad Dogs, the trio of Bahians formed by Freire, Danilo Couto and Yuri Soledade.

The surfer was there on tour and received a visit from his father on his 81st birthday, registered on his Instagram account five days ago.

“I never made a living from surfing, I never made money from surfing. I had very few times, counted on my finger, money that came from surfing (…). I don’t regret it, I didn’t chase sponsors a lot. everything by myself, without depending on anyone. I worked with everything in Hawaii, washing dishes, in construction, gardening, selling fruit. When the big wave season arrived, I dropped everything. Then I managed to reconcile”, he told the channel Let’s Surf in a recent interview.
