BERGEN OP ZOOM – A 27-year-old man from Bergen op Zoom punched a police officer in the face on Thursday evening. De Bergenaar was a co-driver in the car of a 22-year-old driver who is suspected of driving on after an accident.

He interfered in the arrest of the driver and assaulted the officer who suffered a black eye and back problems.

Two passenger cars collided on Thursday evening around 10:30 p.m. at the intersection of Markiezaatsweg and Van Konijnenburgweg. A witness states that the 22-year-old driver from Bergen op Zoom drove on after the accident. The license plate of his car was found at the scene of the accident.

In the car that was hit were two girls (19 and 16) who were taken to hospital by ambulance for a check-up. The other passenger, a 13-year-old boy, went to hospital on his own.

Fighter boss punches officer in the face

After a search, officers found the 22-year-old Bergenaar and his car on Van Wamelweg. According to the police, a fight broke out between several people who interfered with the arrest.

Officers tried to calm down the brawl, but one officer was punched in the face by a 27-year-old Bergen resident. Images of the assault were made with a bodycam. The agent reports the assault. The suspect is in jail.
