The steps towards space are accelerating with the acceleration of technological progress, and the Kingdom has become, today, Saturday, the latest to join the ranks of those seeking to reach the moon.
The Kingdom joined the international parties contributing to the mission to reach the moon, Artemis 1, in partnership with the United States of America.
Tomorrow is the second launch of the “Artemis 1” rocket… and NASA is focusing on “cooling”
The Kingdom contributes to making space history
The US embassy in Riyadh stated that “the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia is the latest international signatory to help reach the moon.”
“Today, the Artemis 1 mission will make history, and the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia and the United States of America are working together to achieve this,” the embassy added through its official account on Twitter.
Artemis 1 mission to the moon
And NASA announced the readiness of its specialized teams to launch the Artemis I mission to the moon.
The ground teams at the Kennedy Space Center in Florida, USA, began final preparations on the eve of the second attempt to launch the giant unmanned NASA rocket “Artemis-1” to the moon, 5 days after the failure of the first attempt due to technical problems.
The much-anticipated launch will launch the Artemis Moon-to-Mars program, the successor to the Apollo lunar missions of the 1960s and 1970s.
The last humans to walk on the moon were the two-man Apollo 17 team in 1972, following in the footsteps of 10 other astronauts during 5 previous missions, beginning with Apollo 11 in 1969.
First flight problems
Flight officials gave the go-ahead for the launch of the new 32-storey Space Launch System (SLS) rocket, carrying the Orion space capsule, to begin the Moon to Mars program to return to the Moon.
The “Moon to Mars” program is the successor to the famous Apollo program in the twentieth century, according to NASA officials.
Jeremy Parsons, deputy program director for the Space Center, said that tests conducted Thursday night showed that the fuel leak problems that led to NASA’s decision to postpone the launch had been resolved.
In turn, the director of the “Artemis” mission, Mike Sarafin, stated that “two major problems related to a damaged temperature sensor and some cracks in the foam” layer have been largely resolved.
The reason for the name Artemis
Half a century after the last Apollo flight, NASA has revived the program to send humans to the moon, under a new name, “Artemis”.
Artemis is known in ancient Greek mythology as the goddess of hunting, forests, wildlife, and the moon, and she is the twin of Apollo, the god of the sun, music and poetry.
It is likely that NASA chose the name Artemis for the new mission that succeeds Apollo, after it embodied its twinning with the famous mission of the twentieth century, which is common for space missions, as it is known for the names of planets. Apollo and Artemis are symbolized in mythology by the image of a crossbow.
Objective of the mission of Artemis
Artemis 1 blasts through the Orion capsule into lunar orbit, to verify that the craft is safe to transport future astronauts.
Women represent 30% of the workforce in the Artemis launch rooms, after they were limited to one woman on the Apollo mission.
The program aims to enable humanity to reach Mars, establish a permanent human presence on the Moon, and establish a base on its surface.
It is expected that Artemis 2 will transport astronauts to the moon in 2024, without landing on its surface, to be followed by the launch of a manned mission for the Artemis 3 crew in 2025, according to the best estimates.
In the distant future, the program aims to teach humanity life in space and the technologies needed to make continuous trips to Mars.
