•Dr. Maher Al-Hourani, Chairman of the Board of Directors of Al-Ahliyya Amman University, said: It is necessary to think outside the box and go to the required disciplines in the local and foreign labor market, in addition to the need to change legislation and ways of thinking, and that the admission policy should be specific to each university with the presence of oversight, standards and determinants.
He pointed to the change in the view of education after the Corona pandemic, as some believed that virtual universities and “online” education were the solution… Then the concepts changed and the world changed in the lifestyle, especially in light of what we see of (famines, wars, unemployment and poverty)… Where it changed Orientation to technical education and the disciplines required in the labor market locally, Arably and globally, such as food security, cyber security, nursing, artificial intelligence and digital marketing…. Noting that millions of jobs are vacant for such specialties locally, in the Arab world and the world.
* This came during a meeting for the “Roya” satellite channel between Dr. Dhafer Al-Sarayrah (Chairman of the Higher Education Accreditation and Quality Assurance Commission) and Dr. Maher Al-Hourani, Chairman of the Board of Directors of Al-Ahliyya Amman University in the “Helweh Ya Dunya” program, yesterday Friday 9/2/2022.
•Dr. Dhafer Al-Sarayrah said during the meeting (after congratulating the successful high school graduates): The recent decisions of the Higher Education Council and the decisions of the Higher Education Accreditation Commission and Quality Assurance have focused on stagnant and saturated programs as well as on programs required in the labor market, especially those related to high skills and competencies.
He added about international rankings: Rankings are a mandatory reality for every university. Countries depend on existing universities on rankings, and this matter is an improvement in the university’s reality, especially in terms of scientific research and the university’s academic reputation, faculty members and students coming to study at the university.
He stressed that the accreditation body is a supervisory and guiding body that actually monitors the numbers and quality of faculty members, students, competencies and international accreditations, because the specialization approved by a global authority considers its graduates equivalent to graduates of major international universities. He pointed out that our universities have accredited many programs (specialties) in Engineering, pharmacy, medicine and others.
He said: The Accreditation Board has achieved a qualitative achievement, with the support of the Minister of Higher Education and Scientific Research and the Prime Minister, by obtaining the classification of the accredited body by the American Accreditation for Medicine in the Middle East.
He added during the meeting on the independence of universities: that private universities have administrative and financial independence, while public universities do not enjoy complete independence in this field.
He said: The Higher Education Council is studying the policy of canceling the unified admission and canceling the financial support provided to public universities.
He pointed out about attracting international students to study in our universities, and according to the policy of “Human Resources Development”, work is underway to attract 80,000 male and female students within 10 years, of whom we now have 40 thousand male and female students in our universities.
He said: The authority, in order to enhance efficiency, imposed the necessity for universities to cooperate with international universities to improve programs, and universities have begun to do so.
•As for investing in education, Dr. Maher Al-Hourani said:
This is a step for the development of society and the country. Education is the basis, and it reflects the image of the country (any country).
He stressed that it is necessary to change our legislation and our ways of thinking, and to think outside the box… At the level of programs and specializations, or at the level of changing the admission policy to be specific to each university with the presence of standards, control and limitations.
Dr. Maher Al-Hourani touched on excellence and that the late “father”, the founder Dr. Ahmed Al-Hourani, used to say: The important thing is not success, but the important thing is excellence and the student’s love for what he wants to study amidst his talent.
Dr. Maher referred to (the inventor of the iPhone and the inventor of the electric car) and also to his late father by establishing the first private university in Jordan and the region, as well as the distinguished media, as is the “Roya” channel.
He said to become distinguished, you must see where life is going and where the labor market is going.. Then, with your distinction, you must succeed.
