The president of the Alexandria Film Festival, Egyptian art critic, Prince Abaza, commented on the controversy surrounding the list of the 100 best comedy films in the history of Egyptian cinema, noting that it is natural for some people not to like the referendum.

The list of the 100 best comedy films in the history of Egyptian cinema, announced by the Alexandria Festival in cooperation with the Egyptian Critics Union, sparked widespread controversy in Egypt, because of what activists described as “ignoring many distinguished comedies, as well as ignoring great artists such as Mohamed Sobhi,” according to their saying.

And participated in the referendum on the selection of films, 32 film critics.

Abaza told “Erm News”: “We conducted a referendum and were assigned to it by a respected critic, and he chose respected critics. The referendum took place, and the results were announced in a press conference. Any referendum expresses a segment of the people and does not obligate all people.”

Regarding the criticism leveled at the referendum on social media, the head of the Alexandria Festival commented: “Not everyone will write on his page. I am obligated to respond to it. We have said our opinion and everyone has the right to say his opinion and disagree with us. There is no referendum that satisfies all people and is not binding on all people.”

The Egyptian critic indicated that he respects all opinions, and appreciates everyone, and the referendum was conducted by major critics.

The list, which was announced during a press conference last Wednesday evening, was topped by the artist Adel Imam as the best comedian, and the movie A Rumor of Love by the artist Omar Sharif and the artist Soad Hosni as the best comedy movie.

Many audiences and critics criticized the list, because there are many films that do not belong to comedy in the first place, such as “Between Heaven and Earth”, and the list is devoid of many comedy icons in Egypt, such as the late Zeinat Sedky, at a time when the artist Mervat Amin In second place, although she is not classified as a comedian.
