Shafaqna – The Board of Trustees of the International Union of Muslim Scholars announced the assignment of Habib Salem Saqqaf Al-Jafri to head the union until the end of the current session, in succession to the former president Ahmed Raissouni, who recently resigned from the presidency and membership of the union.

In a statement by the Federation, Habib Salem Saqqaf Al-Jafri was assigned after the resignation of Moroccan Dr. Ahmed Raissouni, against the background of his statements that were considered a threat to the sovereignty of the countries of Mauritania and Algeria.

Al-Jafri was chosen from among the three deputies of the president to complete the remaining period, provided that the election of the president, his deputies and the trustees will be in the ordinary general meeting that was decided to be held at the beginning of next year.

Who is Saqqaf Al-Jafri?

Dr. Habib Salem Saqqaf Al-Jafri was born in Solo – part of Central Java Province – in Indonesia on July 17, 1954 AD. He obtained a doctorate in Sharia from the Islamic University in 1986 AD, and held the position of Minister of Social Affairs in Indonesia. He also worked as a lecturer in postgraduate studies at the University of Sharif Hidayatullah Islamic State in Jakarta, and a lecturer at the Faculty of Sharia at the Institute of Islamic and Arabic Sciences in Jakarta.

He also served as Director of the Sharia Advisory Center in Jakarta, Chairman of the Advisory Board of Bait Al Mal “Moamalat”, a member of the Sharia Board of Islamic Insurance “Takaful”, and a member of the Sharia Board of the National Bank in Jakarta.

About two weeks ago, the International Union of Muslim Scholars announced the acceptance of the resignation of its president, Sheikh Ahmed Raissouni, following his controversial statements about the Western Sahara.

Raissouni said – in a statement – that he resigned in order to “adhere to his firm, firm, and uncompromising positions and opinions, and in order to exercise his freedom of expression without conditions or pressure.”

In a previous interview with the Moroccan “Blanca Press” website (independent) in mid-August, Raissouni stated that the Moroccans are ready to advance towards Tindouf (an Algerian city) to liberate their desert, according to him. Morocco must return to what it was before the European invasion.”

On August 17, the Secretary-General of the International Union of Muslim Scholars Ali Al-Qarra Daghi said that the union’s position on the statements of its president, Ahmed Raissouni, in a television interview that was recently broadcast on Western Sahara, “represents him alone, and does not represent Muslim scholars.”
