Activists on social networks circulated a video clip of a Syrian father throwing one of his children into the sea after he died of thirst, during a one-way trip to Italy in search of a better life.

Video footage showed a Syrian father throwing one of his children into the sea after he died of thirst, and shrouded him in his clothes amid a state of shock and fear among those on one of the illegal immigration boats, according to Al Jazeera.

About 32 migrants lived a real tragedy after they ran out of food, drink and fuel during a trip on a boat that set off from the Turkish city of Antalya to the Italian coast on August 27.

Those on the boat tried to find any way to survive, so they mixed the salty sea water with toothpaste for one last meal after they became very hungry and thirsty.

Six people, including 3 children, could not bear the salt water and suffered from severe diarrhea and severe dehydration and died, while the rest of the passengers stuck to the bodies of the dead, hoping to bury them properly when they reach the land.

The bodies of the dead were subjected to rotting due to the high humidity, which prompted the passengers to shroud the victims, especially children, in their clothes, and throw them into the sea, while an Italian ship was able to rescue the rest of the passengers after several days at sea.

For its part, the United Nations High Commissioner for Refugees confirmed the death of 6 Syrian migrants of starvation and thirst while trying to cross the Mediterranean Sea on a boat.

She explained that more than 30 people were on board the boat, noting that a large number of survivors are in a “very dangerous” health condition.

UNHCR Representative in Italy Chiara Cardoletti tweeted that “six migrants, including children, women and adolescents, who died at sea, died of thirst, hunger and severe burns.”

She added that “this is not acceptable”, calling for strengthening rescue operations at sea, as it is the only way to avoid such tragedies.

Among the victims were a one-year-old and a two-year-old, a 12-year-old boy, a grandmother and a mother who had her children with her, but they survived the disaster, according to a statement by the High Commissioner for Refugees.
