The German Statistics Office “Destatis” reported today, Thursday, that the prices of firewood and wood panels in Germany in August 2022 increased by 85.7% compared to the same month last year.

The statement said: “The prices of firewood and wood panels in August 2022 increased by 85.7% compared to the same month of the previous year, and thus significantly exceeded the increase in consumer prices as a whole.”

The ministry explained that “the reasons for the higher prices of firewood and wood than the average are the increase in demand, and the increase in purchase and transportation costs in the wood industry sector.”

It is noteworthy that more citizens in Germany are turning to firewood as an alternative way to heat their homes amid rising gas, oil and electricity prices.

Oleg Aksyutin, deputy chairman of the board of directors of Gazprom, said on Sept. 15 that China is increasing its orders for gas delivery via the Siberian torrent even as demand inside the country slows.

“Gazprom is addressing an increase in demand from Chinese parties to supply gas through the Siberian Gas Pipeline, even in the midst of a slowdown in the growth of gas demand in the country,” Aksyutin said during a session at the St. Petersburg International Gas Forum, today, Thursday.

A few days ago, the producer price index in Germany rose last August to 45.8% on an annual basis, with the continuing severe effects of the rise in energy prices in the country.

Data from the Federal Statistics Office “Destatis” showed that the producer price index on a monthly basis grew 7.9%, compared to the previous July.

The country is still suffering from successive rises in energy prices, due to the decline in Russian natural gas supplies as a result of sanctions against Russia, and the government’s continued search for other suppliers.

German Chancellor Olaf Scholz will start a visit to the Middle East this weekend to discuss gas supplies and sign new supply contracts from the UAE, Saudi Arabia and Qatar.
