Participants in the “Experiences in the Saudi Documentary Film” virtual open meeting, organized by the Film Commission, stressed that the documentary film industry faces some difficulties, despite the success of some experiences and the achievement of many local and international awards.

The participants in the meeting talked about the historical beginnings of the documentary film globally, then reviewed the first Saudi documentary work, the film “Assassination of a City” directed by Abdullah Al-Muhaisen in 1976 AD., stressing that Saudi filmmakers have recently directed their focus to the production of documentaries, by monitoring the stories and stories that abound in our society, to present A group of distinguished works, from which they reap many local and international awards.

Participants touched on the methods and types of documentaries and the differences between them, including the “news report” that includes several methods, including coverage of events, or “investigative” to explore and monitor societal opinions on a particular issue, and “informative” that contains scientific studies, numbers and information suitable for morning or weekly programmes.

The participants talked about the fact that the Saudi documentary film is still very focused on the personal interview method, while some were able to present documentaries in other ways, so that all of them are witnesses to stories and societal events in the future.

Participants emphasized that the idea is the main basis from which the filmmaker must start to present his visual material, followed by his method used, with the necessity of not being biased or intolerant of his idea, and including it impartially – as needed – without affecting the rest of the different ideas, opinions and points of view. They reviewed some of the difficulties they face in making the Saudi documentary film, including its weak economic returns, which often do not cover its production costs, in addition to the challenge of obtaining the confidence of the various segments of society to tell their stories, and the scarcity of documents on some historical subjects, due to the lack of sufficient and clear recordings, This made the participants recommend the necessity of archiving the events, to be used in the future as reference points that facilitate the process of making films of all kinds.
