Three Palestinian factions affiliated with the PLO called on President Mahmoud Abbas to stop participating in the Sharm el-Sheikh security meeting, which will be held tomorrow in Egypt, with the participation of Jordan, Israel and the United States, in order to achieve calm during the upcoming month of Ramadan.
In a joint statement, the factions called on Egypt and Jordan to cancel the meeting and not to proceed with this course, which they described as “extremely dangerous” for the Palestinian people.
“non-binding results”
The factions’ statement stressed that the results of the meeting are not binding on them and increase the factors of division and weakness in the face of existing risks.
The statement also considered that “the insistence on participating in the meeting represents an unprecedented disregard for the positions of the Palestinian consensus and the decisions of the bodies and institutions of the Palestine Liberation Organization, which affirmed its refusal to turn the Palestinian issue into a security issue.”
In addition, the Israeli Broadcasting Authority said that Cairo is working to sponsor contacts between the Palestinian Authority and Israel. Egyptian Foreign Minister Sameh Shoukry is expected to participate in this summit.
For his part, the Secretary of the Executive Committee of the PLO, Hussein Al-Sheikh, said in a tweet on his Twitter account that the Palestinian delegation will participate tomorrow in the Sharm Al-Sheikh security meeting, with a regional and international presence.
Division and fears of escalation
Al-Araby correspondent from Ramallah spoke of a clear division in the Palestinian street over the upcoming conference, as new statistics showed that most citizens in the West Bank, East Jerusalem, and Gaza consider that the meeting will not be in the interest of the Palestinian cause, and that it seems to be aimed at targeting the growing resistance in Nablus and Jenin governorates.
In turn, Al-Araby’s correspondent in Jerusalem confirmed that Israel claims to participate in the security meeting in order to establish calm, but in return it threatens the Palestinians by announcing the existence of a wanted list that includes the names of “activists”, according to its description. Their fate will be either behind bars or death, according to what they say. It was mentioned in the report of the Israeli Broadcasting Corporation, which indicates that the next few days will witness more Israeli escalations in terms of incursions and assassinations.
She added that the same Israeli delegation that represented Israel at the Aqaba meeting last February will participate in the Sharm el-Sheikh conference, headed by the head of the National Security Council, Tzachi Hanegbi.
Funeral of two martyrs
In the field, the bodies of two martyrs were transferred, one of whom was Sufyan Al-Khawaja, who was martyred three years ago. The occupation handed over his body yesterday, Friday, to the cemetery of the town of Ni’lin, west of Ramallah, his birthplace.
Yazan Khasib, from the Qaffin area in Tulkarem, was also buried, who was killed yesterday, Friday, at a military checkpoint at the entrance to Al-Bireh after being shot, claiming he was trying to carry out a stabbing attack.
