The former Kuwaiti National Assembly, which was elected in 2020, headed by Marzouq Al-Ghanim, returned to complete its legal term, after the Constitutional Court ruled that the parliamentary elections that took place in September 2022 were invalid.

And the Kuwait News Agency stated that the court, which met, on Sunday, decided to invalidate the elections on the basis of which the members of the National Assembly were elected in 2022, and that the election of the parliament representatives was invalid. It also decided to return the previous National Assembly in 2020, headed by Marzouq Al-Ghanim, to complete its legal term.

The life and upbringing of Marzouq Al-Ghanim

Marzouq Alim Muhammad Thunayan Ali Al-Ghanim was born in the capital, Kuwait, on November 3, 1968. He obtained a Bachelor’s degree in Mechanical Engineering with honors from Seattle University, USA.

He gained his political and parliamentary experience from his family, as he is the nephew of Abd al-Latif Thunayan al-Ghanim, the elected president of the Constituent Assembly, who laid the first building blocks for the democratic parliamentary system and the constitution in Kuwait, between 1962 and 1963.

His mother, Fayza Mohammed Al-Kharafi, was the first Kuwaiti to obtain a doctorate in chemistry, and when she was 47 she took over the administration of Kuwait University, becoming the first woman to hold such a position in the Arab world.

As for his uncle, he is Jassem Muhammad Al-Kharafi, who headed the National Assembly for 12 consecutive years between 1999 and 2011.

Marzouq Al-Ghanim’s economic experience

His father, Muhammad Thunayan Al-Ghanim, is a well-known businessman. He headed the Kuwaiti Chamber of Commerce and Industry for several sessions, which helped Marzouq Al-Ghanim to build economic and administrative experience, and he began his economic life until he headed major companies, including the Egyptian Kuwaiti Holding Company.

Marzouq Al-Ghanim held the position of Chairman of the Board of Directors of the Boubyan Petrochemical Company, the Building Materials Company and the Global Telecom Company, and he benefited from his academic studies when he became a professional in commerce, before devoting himself to politics and public work.

Marzouq Al-Ghanim entered the Kuwaiti National Assembly for the first time in 2006, when he was 38 years old.

He was active within the Council and held membership in several committees, including the Youth and Sports Committee. Thanks to his achievements, he succeeded in preserving his seat in the Council since he entered it for the first time, and in 2013 he was President of the Arab Inter-Parliamentary Union.

Al-Ghanim managed many political crises between parliament and the government, during his presidency of the dissolved National Assembly. It was clear that he used his skills as a successful businessman to settle it.

Marzouq Al-Ghanim was elected Speaker of the Kuwaiti National Assembly since 2013, then was re-elected in 2016 until December 11, 2020, and was elected again as Speaker of the National Assembly from December 15, 2020 until the parliament was dissolved in August 2022, before the Constitutional Court’s decision returned him to complete his work with members of Parliament, which He headed it.
