Mauritius: a schoolboy has just filed a complaint against the police, for brutality

A 17-year-old schoolboy filed a complaint against the police on Wednesday. He claims to have been brutalized by the police during his arrest on Tuesday at Rose-Hill station. Charges denied by the defendants. The scene, filmed by a witness, circulates on social networks.

An investigation has been opened to determine whether a Mauritian schoolboy (Editor’s note: the term college student in Anglo-Saxon countries does not have the same meaning as in France)aged 17, was the victim of police violence, this Tuesday, August 30, 2022, at the station of Rose Hill. The alleged victim filed a complaint on Wednesday with the Independent Police Complaint Commission (IPCC). He was accompanied by a lawyer. The young man’s family was also present.

Tuesday afternoon, teenagers heckle in the station, Place Jean Cardinal Margeot Bus Station and tram. The police in charge of the sector intervene to restore calm, as Le Mauricien explains. Immediately, one of the students sings begins to sing: Polico krapo”. The tone rises, calm returns, then the incident!

It is impossible to determine whether the complainant was the victim of police violence during his filmed arrest, as shown in this video published by L’Express de Maurice. It is clear, on the footage of the arrest. There is tension and the arrest is eventful, but at first glance, the schoolboy was not ostensibly struck.

Did the plaintiff suffer violence afterwards?

Impossible to answer, only the survey will be able to answer this question.

If this incident has taken on such a scale, it is also due to the revelations which date from May 2022, concerning the beatings of alleged offenders, during their arrests and in police custody. Videos have been posted on the Internet. The victims are beaten and tortured.
The serious charges, of the young man, are now in the hands of the justice of the sister island. The press does not specify whether he submitted a medical certificate to the services of the IPCC.
