Some slogans have the power to change the course of an election.
From the PLQ’s “Maître chez nous” in 1962, to the Bloc Québécois’ “A proper party in Quebec” in 2004, to the PLQ’s “We are ready” in 2003, these slogans marked specific moments in our history.
They had the strength to breathe in the spirit of the times and identify the opportunity.
Now, what about the 2022 election?
Surprise ! Quebeckers’ favorite slogan is that of Éric Duhaime of the Conservative Party of Quebec (PCQ).
At 20% of followers, the “Libres chez nous” resonates outside of conservative supporters.
Across North America, the politicians of the moment are those who successfully combine libertarianism, protest against the health crisis and anger against the elites.
Éric Duhaime is our Quebec counterpart, and his slogan is the embodiment of this union.
These politicians are all humming the same tune: giving you back your freedom and giving you back control of your lives. Not for nothing does Pierre Poilievre among the Canadian Conservatives gather crowds by repeating a single thing, namely “to make Canada the freest country in the world”.
All this is certainly demagogue and disconnected from reality, but it carries.
That said, one could, in the light of current events, argue that this unhindered freedom always ends in the law of the jungle: free to insult one’s opponents, free to propose to arm the teachers, free to take to the media…
And we could especially note the ability of the PCQ to fiddle with our history.
Inspired by “Maître chez nous”, the “Libres chez nous” is its antithesis.
The “Maître chez nous” represents the conquest of power by Quebecers through the construction of a strong and national state.
The “Libres chez nous” carries the opposite ideal: that of extreme individualism, which always ends in anti-nationalism, as evidenced by Duhaime’s lack of interest in French.

In second place is the “Let’s continue” caquiste.
Seventeen percent define it as their favorite, even though 42% of voters support the CAQ.
We find it, therefore, boring, even at the CAQ! However, it remains effective.
It captures the mood of a majority of Quebecers, specifically the 58% satisfied with the government.
A majority, tired of asking the big existential questions, moreover unresolved, who wish to continue their journey “elsewhere”.
Its effectiveness is proven by this beginning of the campaign: while the oppositions are arguing with each other, the CAQ continues its walk in the political stratosphere.
It multiplies managerial promises, comforting and far from controversy. From the formula “Take less, but take care of it” on immigration in 2018, we move on to the “anti-inflation shield” and “Your health”. “Now” at the CAQ, voters are shaken less.
The other slogans
“Vote true. Real issues. Real solutions” of the PLQ is in third place. Some appreciate it, mainly those who believe that economic issues are the “real business” and identity issues are only a pretext to “blow on the embers of intolerance”.
The slogans of the PQ “Le Québec qui s’assume. For real” and QS “Changer d’ère” do not arouse emotion.
However, they have the quality to speak to specific voters: hardened separatists and progressives who want to transform society.
The problem is less their slogan than the ever-decreasing number of voters who identify with these two categories…
