The actress and icon of a whole generation Jane Fonda announced this Friday, September 2, to be suffering from cancer. It was in a long post on Instagram that the octogenarian revealed herself. “My dear friends, I have something personal to share”she wrote. “I was diagnosed with non-Hodgkin’s lymphoma and started chemotherapy.”
We learn that it has actually been six months since Jane Fonda became aware of her illness and is undergoing treatment. She wanted to reassure the public. “It’s a very treatable cancer”she says. “80% of people survive.”
The 84-year-old actress is also a writer and very politically engaged, both socially and ecologically. Values also retransmitted in her announcement, in which she indicates that she is “lucky” and feel “privileged”since she has access to the health system and “to the best doctors” and can financially ensure her care, which is not the case for millions of Americans. “Almost every family in America has had to deal with cancer at one time or another and far too many people don’t have access to the quality health care I get and that’s not fair”she says, before making sure not to let go of her battle for the planet. “We need to talk not just about cures but about causes so we can eliminate them. For example, people need to know that fossil fuels cause cancer. The same goes for pesticides, many of which are made from fossil fuels. , like mine”regrets Jane Fonda. “Believe me, I won’t let any of this interfere with my climate activism.”
Jane Fonda’s career began in the 1960s and was crowned with two Best Actress Oscars, in 1971 for Alan J. Pakula’s “Klute” and in 1978 for Hal Ashby’s “The Return”. She has also been nominated five other times for the most prestigious awards in American cinema.
