In the Maghreb, Algeria does not communicate the number of screening tests, which suggests that the number of contaminations is much higher than the official figures. The last balance sheet stopped reports 46 cases of contamination, no deaths and 36 recoveries. The country totals 270,405 cases of contamination, including 6,878 deaths and 182,012 recoveries.

In Tunisia, 74 cases of contamination, 0 deaths and 83 recoveries have been recorded, according to the latest report available. The country has totaled 1,143,862 cases of contamination, including 29,234 deaths and 1,128,926 recoveries since March 2020.

The European Medicines Agency (EMA) warned on Friday that new variants of Covid-19 could appear this winter, but that vaccines still protect populations against severe forms.

The EMA continues to monitor the situation in order to better understand the new wave and to prepare for new waves, which are always extremely difficult to predict, said Marco Cavaleri, director of the agency’s strategy for health threats and of vaccines, during a press conference.

The EMA had recommended the use of two vaccines adapted to the Omicron variant of Covid-19 from Pfizer/BioNTech and Moderna on Thursday, but the population should not wait for a specific vaccine, added Cavaleri, explaining that they can both be used as a booster for people aged 12 and over who have received their first two injections.

A new Pfizer vaccine, expected to be licensed in September, targets the BA.4 and BA.5 lineages of the Omicron variant, considered the most dominant strains today.

This vaccine, as well as another from Moderna in preparation, will be reserved for the most vulnerable categories, such as the elderly, pregnant women and healthcare workers.

Several million people are confined in China to Chengdu (southwest), after a limited epidemic rebound which paralyzes one of the largest cities in the country.

China continues to follow a strict so-called zero Covid health strategy despite a much lower number of contaminations than the rest of the world. This policy translates into confinements as soon as positive cases appear, almost compulsory PCR tests every 72, 48 or even 24 hours, quarantine placements but also the closure of factories and businesses.

Chengdu, which has a population of 21 million, reported 150 new positive Covid cases on Friday. To stop the contamination, the authorities have launched a general screening of the population and since Thursday have ordered residents to stay at home until further notice.

However, each household is allowed to send one person outside to buy groceries each day – subject to the presentation of a PCR test that is less than 24 hours old.

The pandemic has officially killed at least 6,496,833 people worldwide since the end of December 2019.

The United States is the country with the most deaths (1,071,420), ahead of Brazil (684,029), India (527,911) and Russia (384,441).

The World Health Organization (WHO) estimates, taking into account the excess mortality directly and indirectly linked to Covid-19, that the toll of the pandemic could be two to three times higher than that officially established.
