If all the cities of French Gâtinais Regional Natural Park (PNR) are required to cut off their public lighting at night, other municipalities could be tempted to do so, given the savings made. In 2016, it is Perthes-en-Gatinais (Seine-et-Marne) which is one of the first municipalities to take the plunge.

Savings of 40% for these cities that cut public lighting

“We have even gone further than the obligations of the PNR since we cut the lighting from 11 p.m. to 6 a.m. from May 25 to August 31”, specifies Philippe Macaigne, deputy mayor of Perthes-en-Gâtinais, in charge of the works. .

Outside this period, the lighting is adjusted according to the day and the sunshine. “Beyond the environment, this generates savings for the city’s finances,” he continues. Since then, people have gotten used to it and we haven’t had any more complaints since the time slots were extended. »

At the PNR, we confirm the economic aspect of the measure since the 70 municipalities in Essonne and Seine-et-Marne apply it. “A municipality that cuts off the lighting for 6 hours a night achieves around 50% energy savings, which corresponds to around 40% savings for the finances of the municipalities”, notes the PNR.

Other towns will join

Other municipalities outside the park are also starting to inquire, like Varennes-Jarcy (Essonne), to consider cutting off public lighting. In Seine-et-Marne, the City of Longueville is about to take the plunge.

“In order to contribute to energy savings and reduce nighttime nuisances for wildlife, we have decided to interrupt public lighting from 11 p.m. to 5 a.m., announces Philippe Fortin, the mayor. We have chosen this time slot to allow passengers on the first and last trains of the day to access the station in complete safety. »

In this village located near Provins, the measure will come into force on September 19.
