In memorial day, Texans can buy energy efficient products for the home without paying taxes. Know what days the offers will be and what products qualify.
The Energy Star Sales Holiday allows buyers to purchase certain appliances without paying sales tax, which is 8.25% in Texas. Products must bear the “Energy Star” label, an energy-saving program promoted by the United States Environmental Protection Agency (EPA).
Purchases can be made in store, by phone or Internet. The intention, explains the Texas Comptroller, is to encourage taxpayers to support state-owned companies, while saving money on tax-free purchases during the holiday and, in addition, saving energy.
WHEN DOES ENERGY STAR START AND END IN TEXAS?
The Energy Star sales tax holiday begins on Saturday, May 27 and lasts until midnight on Monday, May 29 (Memorial Day).
WHAT APPLIANCES CAN BE PURCHASED TAX FREE ON THE MEMORIAL DAY HOLIDAY?
Qualifying items you can buy tax-free on Memorial Day are those with the EnergyStar® label:
- Air conditioners (for sale for $6,000 or less).
- Refrigerators (priced at $2,000 or less).
- Ceiling fans.
- Incandescent and fluorescent bulbs.
- Washing machines.
- Dishwasher.
- Dehumidifiers.
HOW MANY PRODUCTS CAN BE PURCHASED PER PERSON?
The ones you want. There’s no limit to the number of qualifying items you can buy, and you don’t need to give the seller an exemption certificate to buy duty-free items.
WHAT ITEMS DO NOT QUALIFY FOR THE DISCOUNT?
There are other items that do not qualify for this discount, according to the Texas Comptroller, the agency in charge of this initiative:
- Water heaters.
- Clothes dryers.
- Freezers.
- stoves.
- Attic fans.
- Heat pumps (heat pumps).
- Wine coolers.
- Beverage coolers.
