Demand for passports grows as the travel season approaches, and appointments to apply for passports don’t come quickly.

There is a backlog of passport applications due to increased demand and staff shortages at the US State Department, CNBC reported.

As of March 24, the processing time for passport applications was between 10 and 13 weeks, the department announced, while expedited applications were around seven or nine weeks.

United States Post Offices (USPS) in the Bay Area, including Chico and Redding, have opened fairs and weekend shifts to give people the opportunity to apply for passports.

Sacramento post offices are not offering additional passport appointments at this time, a USPS spokesperson said. But there are still ways to try to get a date in the area.

USPS walk-in

Most USPS offices in the Sacramento area do not have appointments for the next four weeks, ending May 25.

But you can go to some places without an appointment:

  • Industrial West Sacramento3775 Industrial Blvd., West Sacramento – 8:30 a.m. to 4:30 p.m., Monday through Saturday

  • Citrus Heights6330 Fountain Square Dr., Citrus Heights – 10:30 a.m. to 6:30 p.m., Monday through Sunday

The Sacramento County Public Law Library at 609 Ninth Street has passport services available by appointment.

You can make your appointment online.

UC Davis Passport Services

The University of California at Davis has passport appointments through its Business Center.

They are open from 10 am to 8 pm Monday through Friday and some weekends.

Yolo County Law Library

The Yolo County Law Library, at 204 Fourth Street in Woodland, has appointments for passports.

According to the programmer, new holes are opened daily. You can book online.
