While Météo France again placed Corsica on orange alert for thunderstorms and rain-floods on Thursday August 18, the prefecture of Corse-du-Sud published a decree ordering the evacuation of “all the occupants accommodated in light reception structures on all campsites” located in the department.

Evacuation “without delay”

“The operators of campsites located in the department of Corse-du-Sud must immediately evacuate the occupants accommodated in light structures sensitive to the winds”can we read in article 1.

The mayors are responsible for organizing the reception of the evacuees.

The prefecture justified its decision with regard to “severe weather phenomena on the morning of Thursday August 18, 2022 » as well as “number of significant victims in the department”, while Météo France has again placed the two departments of Corse-du-Sud and Haute-Corse on orange vigilance for thunderstorms and rain-floods.

The Haute-Corse prefecture has indicated that certain campsites in the Balagne region are subject to “at the risk of flooding-storms-wind are being evacuated as a preventive measure for shelter in collaboration with the municipalities concerned”.

Thunderstorms expected overnight

Thursday morning, the violent storms, which caused the death of five people, according to a provisional report, surprised the authorities, including Météo France which issued an orange alert at the last moment.

Météo France informs that storms formed at sea will affect a large part of the western side of the island throughout the night from Thursday to Friday. “We are expecting generalized electrical activity, high rainfall intensities of 40 to 60 mm in less than an hour, hail, strong gusts of wind, from 80 to 100 km/h, sometimes turbulent; waterspouts can be observed on the coastal fringe,” can we read on the bulletin of the meteorological institute.
