At the end of the afternoon, the Minister of the Interior, Gérald Darmanin, who had just arrived in Corsica, announced a sixth death.

What about at sea?

The rescue services are also carrying out numerous rescue operations at sea According to the maritime prefecture, there are “between 60 and 70 operations currently underway at sea or on the” Corsican coast, in a “West-Corsica sector, Calvi, Balagne and a little in Cap Corse”.

“A large majority of these operations are for strandings, overturned or sinking boats, whose mooring has broken,” a spokesman for the maritime prefecture told AFP, deploring “several injuries on the boats” without there being “vital prognosis involved”.

New violent storms expected in the evening, campsites evacuated

A new violent storm phenomenon is expected this Thursday evening from 9 p.m., and during the rest of the night.

“We are announcing a new stormy episode whose intensity we do not know in the evening (…). We are going to prepare for the worst” declared Gilles Simeoni, president of the executive council of Corsica, at the microphone of BFMTV. The island was again placed on orange alert by Météo France for the violent storms expected. “Strong gusts of wind, 80 to 100 km / h,” are expected, said the meteorological agency.

The Corse-du-Sud prefecture has had the campsites evacuated, and Haute-Corse could follow in the coming hours. Several thousand people need to be relocated.

What were the reactions from the political world?

The President of the Executive Council of Corsica, Gilles Simeoni, declared this Thursday on France Info that it was a “doomsday scenario that lasted an hour”. “Right now is the time of pain and contemplation. It was an extremely violent storm. Everything changed in three minutes and the toll could have been heavier,” says the president, who believes that “disasters have been narrowly avoided”.

Gilles Simeoni also welcomed the sight of the Minister of the Interior, Gérald Darmanin, expected on the Island of Beauty this Thursday afternoon and reported that Emmanuel Macron called him in the morning “to inquire about the situation and express their emotion”.
