Bully Herbig comments on the Winnetou debate: “I wouldn’t shoot like that anymore today” – culture

– The Winnetou debate has been making headlines for a few weeks. In an interview, the “Schuh des Manitou” director Michael Bully Herbig commented on the hustle and his 2011 film.

The stories of Winnetou are racist and colonialist and contain cultural appropriation, according to the allegations against Karl May’s films and books. People’s opinions differ greatly: some see the film as completely out of date, others think the stories are Classic and see no problem.

In an interview with Radio Bremen Michael Bully Herbig commented on the ongoing discussion. The director of the Winnetou parody “Manitou’s Shoe” sees difficult times for the comedy film industry in the future, but can understand the debate in some areas.

“Polemical Discussion”

“I think certain developments are totally right. I totally understand the fact that people are talking about things that you might not say today like they were 20 years ago,” Herbig shares his opinion. “I just think that this discussion is a bit polemical. And I have the impression that everyone is so loud at the moment that nobody is listening to the other anymore.”

The filmmaker wouldn’t shoot a comparable parody of “The Shoe of Manitou” again today. “The comedy police have gotten so strict. It takes away a bit of your innocence. And your freedom.” In the current time it is much more difficult to shoot comedies, “because you step on people’s toes much faster,” says Herbig. “If someone throws the manslaughter argument at me, ‘You hurt my feelings,’ I can’t say, ‘That’s not true’.” Herbig assumes that the comedy scene will be in bad shape in the future.
