A head-on collision occurred above Silvaplana on Saturday. (see also report from 10:33 a.m.) Several people were injured in the accident:

Shortly before 9:30 a.m. on Saturday, a 63-year-old Swiss woman and her 73-year-old passenger were driving in their car on the N29 national road from Silvaplana uphill in the direction of the Julier Pass.

At the same time, a 24-year-old Eritrean with his four vehicle occupants drove his car from the pass down towards Silvaplana. At the beginning of a clear straight, at Alp Güglia, he started to overtake a passenger car in front of him.

As a result of the maneuver, for reasons that are still unknown, he got into the oncoming lane in the long right-hand bend and collided head-on with the oncoming vehicle of the 63-year-old who was driving uphill.

After the first emergency medical care on site, five slightly injured people were transported to the Oberengadin hospital in Samedan by the Oberengadin rescue service and Rega.

A 32-year-old passenger in the vehicle traveling down the valley was flown over with her 8-month-old baby in a second Rega helicopter to the Graubünden Cantonal Hospital in Chur for a check-up. Both heavily damaged vehicles had to be loaded up and taken away.

salvage and clearance work

During the two-hour work at the accident site, the N29 national road between Bivio and Silvaplana had to be completely closed in both directions.

In addition to the Graubünden canton police, the Graubünden Civil Engineering Office, two Rega rescue helicopters, the Oberengadin rescue service, a towing service and the Trais Lejs and St. Moritz fire brigades were on site.

Together with the Graubünden public prosecutor’s office, the Graubünden cantonal police are investigating the exact circumstances that led to this traffic accident.
