A mystery is the black sword, which Theo (Tyroe Muhafidin) finds. Theo himself is also a blank slate, because he doesn’t exist in Tolkien’s original, does he? One theory is that Theo could later become Sauron’s mouth, which we already know from the Extended Edition of The Lord of the Rings: The Return of the King when Aragorn cut off his head.

There is not much evidence, but the black sword seems to have a corrupting effect on Theo, making it almost inevitable that Theo will sooner or later become a servant of Sauron. As one of the most famous servants that Amazon Prime Video owns the rights to, Sauron’s Mouth obviously comes into question.

During the War of the Ring in the Third Age, i.e. during the film trilogy, Sauron’s mouth is governor of Sauron’s fortress Barad-dur. He is one of the few servants of Sauron who communicate directly with the Dark Lord. In the third film, the Extended Edition, Sauron’s mouth negotiates with Aragorn before he is killed.

Sauron’s mouth, before his time as servant of the Dark Lord, was a human descended from the Númenóreans. He comes from the southern lands and was a powerful warlock. Over time he has forgotten his own name.

Theo also hails from the Southlands, and since the identity of his father is still a mystery, he may well be of Númenórean descent. With the sword, which seems to be black and blood magic, Theo could also become a sorcerer.

The only flaw in this theory is that Sauron’s mouth is mortal. He is not one of the Nazgul and thus as a Númenórean he could “only” live to be a few hundred years old. However, with The Lord of the Rings movies set more than 3000 years after The Rings of Power, it’s unlikely Theo will be able to live that long.

We will find out in the next few episodes whether he still becomes a servant of Sauron that we know from the books. A new episode appears every Friday at 6 a.m. in the Amazon Prime Video news program.
