Because of the detonation of a World War II bomb, there will be traffic restrictions for motorists and shipping in Oranienburg this Thursday. It is the 217th bomb that has been rendered harmless in Oranienburg since reunification, said the city spokeswoman. Oranienburg, north of Berlin, is particularly badly affected due to heavy bombing during World War II.

In an area of 900 meters around the site, the federal highway 273 and part of the Havel will be closed in the morning (from around 9.45 a.m.), as the city spokeswoman announced. Local residents are hardly affected. With the help of a drone with a thermal imaging camera, however, it is checked that there are no mushroom pickers and other walkers in the area. According to the city, the blasting is then planned around 11 a.m. The restricted area can then be lifted again.

On Monday, explosive ordnance experts investigated the danger posed by the 250-kilo American-made bomb in a wooded area. A detonation was necessary because the bomb was in a muddy spot and in poor condition, it said. Walkers found the bomb on Sunday.

According to estimates, there are probably still around 250 World War II bombs in the ground in Oranienburg. For months, the city has been preparing the complex uncovering of two finds at the Friedenthaler lock, which are very likely to be bombs. According to the city, they are at a depth of twelve meters and thus deeper than all the bombs found in Oranienburg so far. (dpa)
