Can you eat peas raw? We tried them!

I often tossed and turned in my sleep. I had to endure agony in the dark hours of the night when I was alone with my thoughts. Who am I? What am I here for? What’s the point of it all and if there’s a damn it, you can eat peas raw? I had shelled a handful of raw, fresh peas hundreds of times. I wanted to throw them in my mouth like Smarties. They should fly higher, higher and higher… but I never dared. right? We examine the little green rascals in the pea season and ask all the laboratories around the world whether peas need to be boiled or not.

Vitamin bombs peas and snow peas

Cooking, baking, frying or whatever destroys a lot of the good stuff. Therefore, not heating is at least good for preserving the things in the peas that make them so healthy. But what’s the point of all this if you get a stomach ache afterwards and fart like an empty ketchup bottle? Exactly… but does that really happen? Because there are so many clever substances for the body in just 100 g of peas that it would even be worth it:

  • Sodium: 1 mg
  • Potassium: 340 mg
  • Calcium: 26 mg
  • Phosphorus: 100 mg
  • Magnesium: 30 mg
  • Iron: 1.9 mg
  • Vitamin A: 60 mcg
  • Vitamin E: 0.3 mg
  • Vitamin B1: 0.32 mg
  • Vitamin B2: 0.15 mg
  • Niacin: 2.5 mg
  • Vitamin B6: 0.16 mg
  • Vitamin C: 25 mg

In addition, more healthy protein than in all other legumes, hardly any calories and lots of fiber and amino acids. Incidentally, the farting and bloating comes from the secondary plant substance tannin, which is found in legumes. Whether cooked or not.

Eating peas raw is fine

Yes, you can eat peas raw. In contrast to other legumes, peas lack toxic ingredients such as the particularly harmful phasin. Cooking destroys these substances and the legumes become edible. Sugar snap peas taste best because they lack the tough parchment layer inside, which can be very fibrous in the mouth. You can briefly blanch the delicious pods or use them directly in wok dishes. Cooking briefly is important here, since sugar snap peas are a delicate ingredient that quickly becomes too soft. Fresh peas, on the other hand, have to be peeled out of the pods before they are eaten. Then you can incorporate them into any recipe you fancy. Like these ingenious pea dishes, for example:
