Gold at the World Cycling Championships! The seconds are on the Swiss side: With the victory of the mixed time trial team, the set of medals for Switzerland is complete.
the essentials in brief
- Success for Switzerland at the World Cycling Championships in Australia!
- In the mixed team time trial, Küng, Bissegger, Schmid, Reusser, Chabbey and Koller win gold.
- Previously there were already silver and bronze in the individual time trial.
Switzerland won the first gold medal at the World Championships in Wollongong (AUS) after Marlen Reusser’s bronze and Stefan Küng’s silver. In the mixed team time trial, Stefan Küng, Stefan Bissegger, Mauro Schmid, Marlen Reusser, Elise Chabbey and Nicole Koller prevailed over the 28.2-kilometer route, almost three seconds ahead of Italy and 38 seconds ahead of host Australia.
At the handover, the men’s team had a lead of 15 seconds. The women should save this, albeit just to the finish. Led by time trial specialist Reusser, the Swiss women set a high pace that Chabbey and actual mountain bike specialist Koller were able to match.
At the finish, they replaced Australia as the leader, which was sure to win their first medal in a mixed team time trial. Although the Italians caught up a few seconds, they were no longer able to displace Switzerland from first place. Germany, starting as the defending champions, had to settle for fourth place.
Revenge for a hundredth bankruptcy last year
The Swiss coup was also favored by the bad luck of fellow favorites Netherlands. Bauke Mollema had a defect after just three minutes and Annemiek van Vleuten fell badly.
The Swiss team has thus succeeded in taking revenge. Last year in Flanders it missed a medal in this discipline behind the Italians by five hundredths.
Switzerland was not at the start of the first event in 2019 in Yorkshire, England. In 2020 in Imola, the race was not part of the competition program that was shortened due to the corona pandemic
