The container village in the Schärding district is off the table. A letter from the affected local chiefs has apparently had an effect.

As “Today” reported, the container village for refugees was supposedly planned on a 14,000 square meter field.

The mayor of Schärding, Günter Streicher (SPÖ), was not informed officially, but by the Innviertler Fleckvieh Breeding Association. Its managing director received a letter from the state government office. This stated that the lease agreement for an agricultural area would be terminated.

concerns expressed

The other affected municipalities of Brunnenthal and St. Florian (Schärding district) and the district administration were not informed about the plans in advance. Then the three local heads Streicher, Bernhard Brait (St. Florian) and Roland Wohlmuth (Brunnenthal) wrote a letter to the responsible social affairs councilor Wolfgang Hattmannsdorfer (ÖVP), Interior Minister Gerhard Karner (VP) and Federal Chancellor Karl Nehammer (VP).

In it they expressed their concerns that, among other things, the site was in a flood area and it was also in the immediate vicinity of two discotheques, schools and kindergartens. The planned size of 100 residents is also too high for this location.

56,000 asylum applications

They missed a “reasonable communication policy”, because up to this point there had been no official message or contact from the state of Upper Austria.

In the meantime, the municipality of Schärding was informed in a reply letter from the Ministry of the Interior that the concerns were taken very seriously. In addition, in view of the recent sharp increase in asylum applications, other locations for a container village are being examined.

More than 56,000 asylum applications were made in Austria this year, which corresponds to an increase of 195 percent “Today” reported.

“Glad that activities had an impact”

According to the reply letter, the possible container location in Schärding is therefore off the table. The letter was presented and discussed at Tuesday’s city council meeting.

“We are glad that the activities that the three municipalities have taken together have had an effect,” reports Streicher: “It has been achieved that Schärding is no longer treated as a container location.”

Alternatives for a suitable location are currently being sought in other communities in the district.
