Anyone who looks at the pictures of the accident that occurred on Tuesday evening (November 15) just outside the city limits of Hamburg can only imagine the force with which the two vehicles must have collided. A total of five people are involved in the collision – for one of them any help comes too late.
Almost head-on collision
At around 7:20 p.m., a BMW was driving in Geesthacht on the Am Schleusenkanal road in the direction of Hamburg. A 28-year-old driver is behind the wheel, with the 27-year-old passenger next to him. At the same time, a VW bus with three occupants wants to turn off the federal highway 404 onto this road – it is not yet clear whether the driver overlooked the approaching BMW or underestimated the speed at which it was driving. A violent collision ensued, with the vehicles almost colliding head-on. The impact throws the BMW against a traffic sign, which is torn from its bracket.
Was the BMW traveling too fast?

The 27 passenger of the BMW does not survive the violent collision. Despite initiated resuscitation measures, he died at the scene of the accident. The 28-year-old driver was taken to hospital with serious injuries, as were the three occupants of the VW bus.
As the police explained in an interview with RTL, the exact cause of the accident has not yet been clarified. However, an expert was called to the scene of the accident in the evening because witnesses stated that the BMW, which had the right of way, was said to be traveling too fast. Both vehicles were seized. The street Am Schleusenkanal was closed until shortly before midnight. (dpa/xas)
