Doctors in private practice are seeing great demand for influenza vaccinations, especially among seniors. The vaccination campaign will last up to and including January 2023.
The free influenza vaccination campaign in the Vienna surgeries has been running for four weeks and has been very well received by the population. “The rush is enormous, especially among senior citizens,” summarizes Naghme Kamaleyan-Schmied, deputy chairwoman of the curia for resident doctors of the Medical Association for Vienna and herself a general practitioner. More than ever, it is evident that patients are looking for personal advice from their medical examiner.
So far, 1,040 ordinations have registered to take part in the campaign. Around 200,000 vaccine doses can be vaccinated in the private sector. This corresponds to about half of the total contingent that the City of Vienna has planned for this winter. In the meantime, 130,000 doses have already been called up by the doctors. “And we definitely have the capacity to vaccinate even more – especially in the group of older people, who are considered to be at risk,” says Kamaleyan-Schmied.
Free flu vaccination in Vienna from November 2nd
Vaccine available in the ordinations
In principle, the recommendation to be vaccinated goes to all population groups. The influenza vaccination is therefore particularly important this year, also because there has been no natural boost from the circulating virus in the population in the past two years. Therefore, experts advise everyone to be vaccinated against influenza. Even if the sting does not always prevent infection, those who have been vaccinated usually get sick less severely and for a shorter time, suffer complications less often and do not have to go to the hospital as often.
