The Dortmund-Hamm railway line is closed after a serious accident in Kamen. At around 12:34 p.m., a regional train on the RE1 line rammed a car on the level crossing on Südkamener Straße. According to the police in Unna, the driver was killed in the collision.
The car was dragged around 200 meters by an RRX train coming from Hamm in the direction of Dortmund. The barriers are said to have been closed at the time of the accident. The regional train came to a standstill with the rear part of the train on the level crossing after emergency braking.
The driver, who did not survive the collision, was traveling south from Westicker Strasse on Südkamener Strasse when his car was hit by the train. The Unna police spokesman Bernd Pentrop said about the cause of the accident: “We are investigating in all directions.”
Even more than an hour after the accident, the regional train with around 130 passengers on board was still on the route. The route closure caused train cancellations and delays, as can be seen from the electronic departure board at Kamen station and the Internet portal zuginfo.nrw. The trains on the RE6, RE3 and RE1 lines as well as long-distance trains were affected. Deutsche Bahn diverted long-distance traffic.
After the passengers had waited almost two hours, the evacuation of the front of the two parts of the train began at around 2:15 p.m. with the participation of the Kamen fire brigade. Passengers were escorted out of the first four carriages and then re-boarded to the back of the train on the open track. At around 3:15 p.m., the rear part of the train with four wagons and the passengers drove back in the exact direction from which the entire team had come almost three hours earlier. The passengers and the train driver were apparently unharmed in the accident.
The route is expected to remain closed for some time. “It takes even longer here,” said police spokesman Pentrop at 2:24 p.m. The police in Unna took over the investigation in coordination with the federal police.
The accident site is around 1.4 kilometers west of Kamen station on a double-track main line, which is also used by long-distance trains such as the ICE. The level crossing where the accident occurred is due to be replaced soon. The underpass for the so-called Südkamener Spange is currently under construction.
Already on Wednesday (November 16) there was a serious accident at a level crossing in the Unna district. A car was hit by a train in Lünen-Alstedde. The driver, the train driver and the passengers were unharmed.
