Cristiano Ronaldo wrote a piece of football history. But when he celebrated his goal, it was his constant rival Lionel Messi who was chasing him.

Portugal started the World Cup on Thursday evening with a 3-2 win against Ghana. The Portuguese superstar managed a special feat in the 65th minute. The 37-year-old put Portugal 1-0 up from the penalty spot (65′), becoming the first player to score at least one goal in five consecutive World Cups. There were one goal each in 2006, 2010 and 2014, and four in 2018. And now a hit at the desert tournament in Qatar.

Ronaldo thus left Germany’s Uwe Seeler, Miroslav Klose, Brazil icon Pele and his long-time rival Lionel Messi, who each scored in four tournaments, behind.

Ronaldo celebrated his goal at the Stadion 974 with his legendary goal celebration, ran up, jumped in the air, turned and landed on the pitch with his legs apart. This legendary celebration was accompanied by a loud “Suuuuuu” shout from the thousands of Portuguese fans in the stadium.

But even at this historic moment, Ronaldo was being pursued by his rival Messi. Because the Portuguese landed after his jubilant jump directly in front of a huge poster of the Argentine. While still in flight, Ronaldo turned his head towards his rival’s face, glaring at Messi in disbelief.

Nevertheless, the curious scene could not stop the jubilation. Ronaldo was immediately hugged by his teammates. In the end, however, Portugal still had to tremble a little. Because Andre Ayew (73rd) scored Ghana’s equalizer before Joao Felix (78th) and Rafael Leao (80th) made the preliminary decision. Osman Bukari shortened again in the 89th minute.
