No traffic possible: train strike also affects the airport – Vienna

Getting to Vienna Airport will be a real challenge on Monday. No operation is possible in the station.

If you happen to have vacation from Monday and want to fly directly to the south, you should get up extra early. As reported, it has been clear since Sunday morning that all railway staff will go on strike from midnight. Every single one of the 5,000 trains will be canceled on this day – regardless of whether long-distance or S-Bahn.

Private railway companies such as Westbahn would not actually be affected by this; on November 22, a voluntary wage increase of 7.5 percent was decided. The problem: all train stations are operated by ÖBB. Means: Not only train drivers, conductors and Co., but also the dispatchers are on strike. Therefore, no train traffic is possible in the stations.

Difficult getting to the airport

Of course, this also applies to the train station at Vienna Airport. The majority of travelers use the fast connection to the city via Railjet, S-Bahn or CityAirportTrain. All of this is canceled on Monday. “During this time, there will be no train traffic to and from Vienna Airport,” the airport clarifies on its website.

After all, the CityAirportTrain can set up a rail replacement bus service. They park at the airport in front of the arrivals hall (bus stop no. 1) and in Wien Mitte opposite the Justice Center on Marxergasse. But be careful: ÖBB tickets are not accepted. A single CAT journey costs eleven euros, with the ÖBB it would be 4.30 euros. The taxi would come to around 30 euros.

Also on roads disabilities

The Vienna Airport Lines bus line operated by ÖBB-Postbus is not affected by the strike measures and is running on three lines as planned (each from Westbahnhof/Hauptbahnhof, Schwedenplatz and Donauzentrum). A single journey costs nine euros.

However, some restrictions are to be expected on the roads. As the Wiener Linien and the ÖAMTC warn, it is assumed that there will be a significantly increased volume of traffic due to commuters. Trips by tram and bus should therefore be avoided as far as possible.
