All trains stand still because the union wants it. A day-long strike paralyzed all rail traffic in Austria today.

Yesterday at 11.07 a.m. the talks about a new railway collective agreement collapsed. The employers offered an increase of 8.44 percent, the union refused, and 50,000 railway workers have been on strike since midnight. Called:

No operation

Nothing works until midnight today.

Not only ÖBB

All ÖBB and Westbahn regional trains have been cancelled.

No replacement service planned

Train traffic in the entire ÖBB rail network has been suspended because the dispatchers are not working. Around 2,000 trains are affected in the Verkehrsverbund Ost-Region (VOR) alone. According to the ÖBB, there is no rail replacement service “Today”.

S-Bahn also affected

The express train is also canceled throughout Germany.

No exception for Nightjets

The ÖBB Nightjets in Germany and abroad will no longer operate until Tuesday morning.

No train to air travel

Instead of the City Airport Train CAT, buses run to Schwechat.

Long-distance trains are cancelled

Long-distance trains abroad from ÖBB and Westbahn are available until Tuesday morning.

Buses not affected

Train and post buses run as usual.

Free rides on the subway

The subway is also running.

Longer waiting times

Municipal transport companies such as the Badner Bahn in Vienna do run, but only every quarter of an hour.

ÖBB recommends alternatives

Union, ÖBB and Westbahn are unanimously advising to postpone train travel for today. Commuters should look around for “alternative routes” or “other modes of transport”, reported “Vida”. The ÖAMTC advised working from home and forming carpools.

commuter rush

The short-term parking zones in Vienna will remain in place (despite the expected rush of commuters).

What happens to the tickets?

Standard ÖBB and Sparschiene tickets that are valid during the strike period remain valid until December 5 or will be refunded if you do not travel (including the fee for seat reservation). The Westbahn offers online cancellation

Tuesday is no longer a strike, as should be further negotiations.

do i have to work today

Unfortunately, a strike is not a free pass to put your feet up. AK labor law expert Jasmin Haindl explains what applies and what needs to be done.

A must

Employees must “do everything reasonable” to get to work on time. Being on the road much longer than usual or having to get up much earlier than usual is considered reasonable. If you have a car, for example, you have to drive it – if the distance allows, employees are encouraged to take the bike or even walk.

extra cost

If there are additional costs because a taxi is the only reasonable alternative, you usually have to dig into your pocket for it. Unless the cost is “significant,” so it really hurts. Then you should ask the employer if he wants that. If so, he has to bear at least part of the costs.

When everything fails

If you have tried everything humanly possible and it is foreseeable that you will not make it to the office or will be late, you must inform the boss immediately. But then you’re off the hook: the day counts as working time, you get paid and don’t have to take a day off. A “punishment”, such as dismissal, is not allowed.

What is “reasonable, substantial”?

Here the law remains deliberately vague because it depends on the individual case. As a rule, this is only precisely defined in the course of court proceedings. However, according to the AK, such proceedings rarely occur.
