“The Biggest Loser” originally appeared on Pro Sieben. However, the first season did not achieve the expected ratings and was initially assigned to Kabel Eins. However, she was not to stay there for long. After only two seasons, Sat.1 grabbed the show, where it has been running continuously since 2012.

What is there to win in “Life Made Easy – The Biggest Loser”?

In addition to the desired target weight, there is also prize money to be won for first place. In season one, this was still 100,000 euros. After the moderate success on Pro Sieben, the prize money on Kabel Eins for seasons two and three was reduced to 25,000 euros. Since the format has been running on Sat.1, the prize money has been 50,000 euros.

Where is the show from?

The Biggest Loser first appeared on NBC in 2004. So the concept originally came from the USA. Since then, the format has been exported to over 20 countries, including Germany.

Does “Life Made Easy – The Biggest Loser” really help you lose weight?

The past shows that many participants gained weight again after the show. The format, originally from the USA, with the concept of buying as much as possible in competition, has even often been questioned. In a study published in the journal Obesity, 14 out of 16 contestants on the original US show took part.

It was found that the participants returned to their original weight, if not gained more, over the following six years. This is also the case with Patrick Kuhfuss, which is probably the best-known case in this country. In 2015 he took part in the show – after the show he struggled with the well-known yo-yo effect and publicly criticized the show.

Ex-candidate Stefan Hentschel also accused the producers of pure greed and denounced the psychological pressure that the participants were suffering from. Even fitness trainer Jörg Giersberg raised serious allegations.

Why was the show renamed by Sat.1?

Actually, the name “The Biggest Loser” was a play on words. The idea behind this was to positively reinterpret the word loser in the context of weight loss. After all, the person who – loosely translated – is the biggest weight loser, that is, who loses the most weight, wins. So why was the show renamed?

For those who don’t take the time to follow this train of thought around the corner, the title “The Biggest Loser” seems simply disrespectful. In the past, there has often been negative feedback from viewers.

In addition, the image should be stored as a pure weight loss show. The candidates should no longer only be helped to lose weight. Rather, it is about accompanying and advising the participants in their lifestyle. The title “Life made easy” should do more justice to this image.

How successful is The Biggest Loser?

In any case, Sat.1 didn’t do itself any favors with the renaming: In 2021, “The Biggest Loser” in Germany still reached an average of 1.76 million viewers according to “Quotenmeter”. After the incarnation under a new name last year, the number of viewers slipped to 1.34 million. This corresponds to a market share loss of 1.4 percent (from 7.2 percent to 5.8 percent).
