Mira Murati: Who is the woman behind ChatGPT?

The company OpenAI has caused a stir with their recently released AI chatbot called ChatGPT. The artificial intelligence conquered the internet with its eloquent nature and progressive answers – the bot even passed a final exam at an elite university without any problems.

The underlying technology is under the direction of Mira Murati. As Chief Technology Officer, she leads the development and implementation of OpenAI’s technology. Because of this, she is considered one of the most influential women in the AI ​​industry. But who is the woman anyway?

Raised in Albania

Mira Murati was born in Albania in 1988. Ever since she was a child, she has shown an increased interest in mathematics and its practical application. However, a problem emerged: “When I was growing up in Albania, there weren’t many opportunities to put theory into practice,” Murati explained in a YouTube video.

Because of this, Murati moved to the United States, where she studied engineering at Dartmouth College in New Hampshire.

She then began her professional career as a summer analyst at investment giant Goldman Sachs, before getting started in the tech industry. Murati has held positions including Senior Product Manager for the Model X at Tesla and Vice President of Product & Engineering at Leap Motion.

In 2018 she then joined OpenAI. She has held the position of CTO since May 2022 and is responsible for the development of ChatGPT, among other things. She is optimistic about the development of the technology, but also sees the dangers that come with it. “AI can be misused, or it can be used by actors with dubious intentions,” Murati said in an interview with Time magazine.

For this reason, she is committed to the regulation of AI. In her opinion, the key question is: “How do you regulate the use of AI in a way that is in line with human values?”

The answers to this question should not only be provided by companies like OpenAI, but also by regulators and governments. She also doesn’t think it’s too early for government intervention. “Given the impact these technologies will have, it’s very important that everyone gets involved,” Murati said.
