(Port-au-Prince, March 14, 2023, Prensa Latina) According to the Haitian Research Center for Human Rights (Centre d’analyse et de recherche en droits de l’homme, CARDH), more than 100 police officers have been killed in the island nation since March 2021 * murdered inside. On the occasion of the Village de Dieu tragedy, in which five police officers were tortured and murdered by members of the ‘Senk segonn’ (Five Seconds) gang, which marks the second anniversary on March 12, 2023, CARDH has published a report. This states that a total of 103 police officers have lost their lives since then. A total of 31 police officers were murdered in 2021, 54 in 2022 and 18 in the first month of 2023 alone. The CARDH also criticizes the fact that the authorities are silent on this topic.
“Since the murder of five members of the Haitian Police (Police Nationale d’Haïti, PNH) in Village de Dieu, the gang has been allowed to kill both police officers and the population so that they can expand their sphere of influence,” the organization laments. She also criticized the fact that the authorities did not comment and that no administrative sanctions were taken against high-ranking police officers. These are responsible for a crime that the organization calls a massacre.
In addition to the events in Village de Dieu, CARDH also condemned the deaths of police officers in the Cité Soleil and Croix des Bouquets neighborhoods in Port-au-Prince, and the January 2023 killing of seven officers in Liancourt Protests led by police officers.
Also among the victims in the country are the Director of the Police Academy, Rigaud Harington, and the Chief Inspector of Croix des Bouquets, Evagelot Bact. The CARDH called on the General Directorate of Police to take responsibility and bring the perpetrators to justice.
