Ex-world champion Benedikt Doll will not be taking part in the summer world championships for biathletes this week in Ruhpolding due to the birth of his first child. The 32-year-old from the Black Forest announced this on Facebook on Tuesday. “I have children and of course that takes a lot of energy and time,” said Doll: “Training is just a little behind. I just can’t leave home and would like to use the time with the child and my wife .”

The Summer World Championships start this Friday and last on the World Cup routes in the Chiemgau Arena until Sunday. Doll was originally supposed to lead the German men’s team. It is still unclear whether the three-time World Cup winner will take part in the German championships in Oberhof in Thuringia next week. “Maybe it will work out next week at the DM, that remains to be seen,” said the two-time Olympic bronze medalist.

Led by Olympic champion Denise Herrmann, the German biathletes will start at the Summer World Championships in Ruhpolding from August 25th to 28th. The disciplines super sprint, sprint and mass start are on the program in the Chiemgau Arena. In addition to Herrmann, the ladies also have Vanessa Voigt, Vanessa Hinz, Janina Hettich-Walz, Franziska Hildebrand, Anna Weidel, Marion Wiesensarter and Juliane Frühwirt. A total of 28 nations with around 400 athletes have registered for the races in the Chiemgau Arena, including the Italian Dorothea Wierer and the Swedes Elvira Öberg and Sebastian Samuelsson. In the past summer title fights, it was only about half of the nations.
