The death of the last Soviet leader?

On August 30, 2022, Mikhail Sergeyevich Gorbachev, who was the last official leader and head of state of the Socialist Union of Soviet Republics (USSR), died. The USSR was a transcontinental union that brought together 15 republics that had communism as their political system. It existed from 1922 to 1991. The current Russian Federation headed the Soviet Union, which -in turn- led the eastern bloc of the Cold War, a political-economic and military confrontation that on the other side had the western bloc led by the United States.

Gorbachev was born in 1931 and served as president of the Soviet Union from 1990 to 1991, the year in which it was dissolved. Gorbachev was a Marxist-Leninist, but in the early 1990s (perhaps – quietly – late 1980s) he turned to social democracy. He quickly rose to power after the successive deaths of three Soviet gerontocrats (Leonid Brezhnev, Yuri Andropov, and Konstantin Chernenko).

Especially after 1986 (the year in which the Chernobyl Nuclear Power Plant accident occurred) Gorbachev, a reformer, emphasized the need to reform the Soviet communist system in two ways, namely the perestroika and the glasnost. With the perestroika (reconstruction) Gorbachev sought to decentralize economic decision-making with a view to promoting its efficiency. As a complement, with glasnost (opening) Gorbachev sought greater freedom of the press and of expression. In fact, during Gorbachev’s pre-eminence political dissidents like Anrei Sakharov returned from internal exile and integrated into urban life. was also installed echo of moscowthe first liberal radio station in the country.

Despite being the gravedigger of the Soviet system, it was probably not Gorbachev who killed him. However, his effort was not enough to relaunch the Soviet system, especially when it entailed a kind of democratization of a system based on authoritarianism. To this day, President Putin’s government has worked to reverse Gorbachev’s reforms. Also, following the invasion of Ukraine, he has ordered the closure of Echo of Moscow
