In the midst of a financial meltdown at Bed Bath and Beyond, the company’s chief financial officer (CFO), Gustavo Arnal, was identified as the man who jumped from the famous ‘Jenga’ building in New York.

The building at 56 Leonard Street is not officially called ‘Jenga’, but it is known as such in the luxurious Tribeca neighborhood and is one of the icons of the Big Apple.

Arnal jumped from the 18th floor near Church Street around 12:30 p.m. Friday, according to the NYPD.

The senior executive, 52, faced problems with the company due to the COVID-19 pandemic, inflation and the complicated recovery of the chain.

Two days before Arnal’s death, the company announced plans to close 150 of its roughly 900 stores and lay off 20 percent of the staff.

Arnal came to that company in 2020, the year of the pandemic, after a successful career at Avon and 20 years working at Procter & Gamble. He was considered one of the highest ranking Latinos in large companies in the US.

The company’s top executives were facing serious pressure, including Mark Tritton being fired in June this year, after the chain’s sales fell 25%. His place would be taken by Sue Gove.

Arnal joined Bed Bath & Beyond in April 2020 with high expectations from the company, because it could “offer new perspectives, knowledge and experience”.

“Gustavo exemplifies this and his business transformation experience at other leading companies, his deep understanding of the retail and consumer goods space, as well as his energy and drive will help accelerate our transformation plans,” a company spokesperson said at the time. .

Arnal’s family has not commented on his death, said The New York Post, the first to report the tragedy.
