During a festival press conference, the 53-year-old actor spoke about the challenge of playing Charlie, an English teacher who teaches classes virtually with the camera turned off, who has a very severe obesity problem, because after For several years he has been credited with a weight that exceeds 270 kilos.

And although Brendan did not undergo any diet to gain weight, but was instead characterized by a prosthetic suit; In turn, the production made use of special effects so that the actor could adopt the most reliable image possible of an overweight person, he had to learn to walk in a new way due to the difficulty that caused him to carry the prostheses that were attached to his Body.

“I developed muscles that I didn’t know I had”, dimensioned the actor when speaking of the effort not only acting, but also physical to which he underwent: “I even felt a sensation of vertigo at the end of the day when they removed all the devices.” All this made him realize that people who suffer from a metabolic disease, such as obesity or overweight, require a lot of strength to overcome this condition.

“It gave me appreciation for those whose bodies are similar. You need to be an incredibly strong person, mentally and physically, to inhabit that physical being,” she elaborated.
For his part, Darren Aronofsky was questioned about why he had chosen an actor he had to characterize and not an interpreter who would be closer to the physical demands of the role, to which the director replied that performing “The Whale” It took him 10 years, because while conceiving this story as a potential to bring to the big screen, finding a performer who connected with the role of Charlie was the most difficult.

But this impediment changed when the filmmaker saw “George of the jungle” and “Gods and monsters”, two films starring Fraser, so he thought that his personality could match the interpretive needs required by his character in “The Whale” , so he asked her to meet him; by the time he got there, the connection between the actor and the part seemed to him to only grow more and more.

This impression also took hold of Brendan, who said he considered Charlie to be the strongest and most heroic role he has played throughout his career: “By far, I think Charlie is the most heroic man I’ve ever played because his superpower is seeing the good in others and bringing it out in himself,” he shared.
