Insecure

If you scroll through her Instagram page, where she has been posting the most beautiful pictures for about six years, you can’t imagine that Paula ever had a problem with her appearance. But where she now fully embraces herself, she used to be very insecure, she says. “I was bullied a lot in high school and I thought I was the ugliest thing there was.”

Paula says she suffered from Body Dysmorphic Disorder (BDD). With this condition, your self-image is so distorted that you are convinced that (a part of your) body is terribly ugly, while in reality those so-called shortcomings are not there. She cites as an example:

“I was on holiday in Zakynthos, where we took a lot of pictures. I felt so fat and ugly then, but now when I look back at those pictures I think: wow, you looked great. It’s so bizarre that you look at yourself like that can see, while the reality is completely different. Your brain makes something out of it that isn’t there.”

Never good

The fact that Paula got a lot of compliments on her looks after she lost weight certainly played a part in her negative self-image. Then I became very critical of myself. It backfired. you go then subconsciously thinking: oh, now I’m worth more, when I hadn’t even lost weight for the looks.” At the same time, Paula was again told by other followers that it was a shame that she had lost weight, because heavier people could no longer be with her. relate. “So you can never really do it right.”

It took a lot of time, but Paula managed to free herself from those negative and insecure thoughts, for example by following therapy. “I’m proud of that. It still sometimes happens that I look at my body and think: I would like to see this differently. But self-love for me is one of the most important things there is.”
