Journalist E. Jean Caroll accuses the former President of the United States of having raped her in 1990, in a fitting room of a Manhattan department store.
SEXUAL VIOLENCE – “Dear friends, tonight, a few minutes after midnight, we filed a rape complaint against the former president”. It is with these words that the journalist E. Jean Caroll, great collaborator of the American version of the magazine Sheannounced on the night of Wednesday November 23 to Thursday November 24 to sue Donald Trump.
An accusation that is not new. The journalist had already formulated it for the first time in the New York Post, in June 2019. She then claimed that the 45th President of the United States had raped her in a fitting room at the Bergdorf Goodman department store in Manhattan.
Informed of these accusations, Donald Trump then responded incompletely that he could not have done that, since the writer was ” not his type “. Since then, he has regularly ridiculed him on social networks, including his own, Truth Social.
A first defamation complaint
The facts, which date back 32 years, were at the time of the first charges prescribed by American justice. But thanks to a new law lifting the statute of limitations for crimes and sexual offenses in New York State, E. Jean Caroll was finally able to file a complaint, three decades later. She is claiming compensatory and punitive damages for the suffering caused, psychological harm, loss of dignity and damage to reputation.
“This new trial may ruin the former president’s Thanksgiving, but it will fuel the hope of every woman grabbed, groped, harassed, pinched, pushed, assaulted or dragged through the mud by a powerful man.”celebrated E. Jean Caroll in a blog post.
After Donald Trump’s first denials, the American journalist had filed a first defamation complaint against the businessman. But the latter, protected by his status as president, has never really been worried by the trial, today on appeal.
Hundreds of trials expected this year
In a new statement, the former President of the United States said that E. Jean Caroll had “completely invented” this rape story, “like all the other lies told about him in the last seven years”. Because in total, let us remember, 17 women accuse the President of the United States of sexual assault.
The journalist’s lawyer, Roberta Kaplan, said her client had ” intends to hold Donald Trump responsible not only for defaming her, but also for sexually assaulting her, which he did years ago in a cabin at Bergdorf Goodman”.
With the introduction of this new temporary law lifting the statute of limitations in New York State for one year, hundreds of women who have missed the opportunity to sue their attackers are seeing their hopes reborn. At least several hundred trials are expected.
