The Pajottenland has been scoring well on the Iberian Peninsula in recent days. While Remco Evenepoel from Schepdaal is on course to take the overall victory in the Vuelta, the Pajot brewery duo of Free State Vanmol from nearby Eizeringen achieved a very good result with the Gronckel beers at the iBEERian Awards 2022..

A few weeks ago, Erwin Vanmol (55) and Jan Panneels (21) sent their Gronckel brews to the university city of Coimbra. There the beers were judged by an international jury of experts. The awards ceremony took place last night. All Gronckel beers were awarded. Gronckel Blond won gold in the hard-fought ‘Belgian Blonde Ale’ category, Gronckel Quadrupel took a silver medal, and both the Gronckel Tripel and Janimal were awarded a bronze medal.

Earlier this year, Free State Vanmol already won awards at the international beer competitions in Lyon and Frankfurt. Jan and Erwin won prizes there with, among other things, their red beer ‘Bloedarend’.

The name ‘Gronckel’ refers to Frans Jozef De Gronckel (1816-1871), a lawyer and word artist from Lennik who gave the region between Zenne and Dender the name ‘Pajottenland’.

Free State of Vanmol was founded in May 2016 by cartoonist Erwin Vanmol. Soon the then 15-year-old Jan Panneels regularly came to lend him a hand. A year later they became partners.

The Gronckel range currently includes the Blond, the Tripel, the Quadrupel and the Janimal. In addition, Jan and Erwin also brew so-called Belgian Raw Ales, such as the Blood Eagle and the Nørse Man. The Gronckel beers are readily available in the better cafes, liquor stores and neighborhood supermarkets of the Pajottenland.
