A 10-year-old boy has been stuck in the 35-meter-deep shaft of a concrete foundation pile in Vietnam since New Year’s Eve. Hundreds of rescuers have tried to lift the construction, but because they failed, they have adjusted their rescue strategy today, Vietnamese media report.
It is not clear whether the boy is still alive and exactly where in the shaft he is.

The boy, named Ly Hao Nam, is in a hole with a diameter of 25 centimeters. Rescue workers now hope to reach it by placing a wider steel pipe around it and then removing the mud between the two structures. Then another attempt is made to pull the concrete pile up. The accident occurred on Saturday morning at a construction site in the Mekong Delta. He called for help shortly afterwards, but has not been heard from since. Rescue workers pumped oxygen into the shaft in hopes of keeping the child alive.
Hundreds of people, including soldiers, are involved in the rescue operation. Because the shaft is narrow, they cannot go down the hole to get the boy out. It is also not possible to throw down a rope, because the boy has no room to tie it around his waist.
Vietnamese boy case ‘a mystery’
“It is a mystery that he fell there,” begins Le Hoang Bao, director of the transport ministry in Dong Thap province. “The foundation pile has a diameter of 25 centimetres. I don’t understand how it happened,” he says Tuoi Tre News, a local newspaper. Foreign media report that the child was looking for pieces of scrap iron with his friends.
A similar incident happened in Morocco earlier this year. Then a toddler fell into a 32-meter deep pit. He was then taken out, but did not survive.
