The Venice Film Festival, the most prestigious international film festival, kicked off its 79th session on Wednesday evening with a grand celebration, with a surprising appearance by Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky on the screen, and in the presence of French star Catherine Deneuve as a guest of honor.

At the Palais des Cinemas on the island of Lido off the sea, the 78-year-old famous French actress was awarded the Golden Lion for her entire career.

The war in Ukraine overshadowed the atmosphere of the opening ceremony, with a video message to President Volodymyr Zelensky, who called on the world of cinema to “not forget” the war, which “is not limited to 120 minutes, but has been going on for 189 days.”

At the conclusion of his speech, a list of the names of the victims of the war in Ukraine, children under the age of 18, was shown on the screen, on a black background, next to the date of birth of each of them.

At the opening, the festival screened the film “White Noise” by Noah Baumbeck, based on the novel of the same title completed in 1985 by the American writer Don de Lillo, who is considered one of the most important novelistic voices in the United States and the world.

The film presents the case of a family of a married couple and their four children, and its events take place in the early sixties of the last century, at a time when the repercussions and echoes of World War II are still fresh in our minds.

Both of them are middle-aged, and as the husband approaches adulthood with years of age and the nature of the academic work he is doing, the wife feels real fears that she will die before the children reach an age that allows them to be independent in their lives.

Monotony and aging lead this couple to constantly think about death, and they enter into a race that shows how much they love each other, as they race over who should die before the other.

And when a terrible traffic accident leads to the spread of toxic and deadly gases in the air, it appears to them that their crisis is small when compared to what is happening around them.

The film stars Adam Driver, Greta Gerwing, Don Cheadle, Raffy Cassidy, Sam Nivola, May Nivola, Judy Turnersmith, Andre L. Benjamin, and Lars Edinger.

The film was expected, especially since the festival’s artistic director Alberto Barbera chose it to open the new session, but it did not reach the level of anticipation, with the exception of the director’s ability to manage the internal scenes, giving them theatrical mechanisms, which clearly appeared in Don Cheadle’s performance.

In my opinion, this film would not have been possible without the outstanding performance of Adam Driver, which I see, although we are still at the beginning of the festival, is a strong candidate for the acting award in a cycle full of great stars.

Stay tuned for the official competition films

There is great anticipation, on the second day of the 79th edition of the world’s oldest film festival, for a directorial duo of high caliber, as Mexican Alejandro Gonzalez Inarto returns to the festival, 8 years after his movie The Revenant, with his new movie titled Bardo. .

In addition to Inarto in the official competition, director Todd Field will participate in his film TÁR (Tar), in which the beautiful American star Cate Blanchett plays the role of a very attractive conductor of an orchestra.

The festival’s official competition program includes 23 films by major directors, such as Italian Gianni Amelio, who presents his daring film The Lord of the Ants, and Darren Aronofsky, who returns to Venice with his new film The Whale, which introduces us to – in the role of Distinguished, in which he embodies a teacher who suffers from psychological and life crises due to his excessive obesity, which forces him to isolate.

Among the films that will be shown in the official competition, the sixth directorial work by the French-Moroccan star, Rushdi Zam, entitled Our Ties, Rushdi Zam is also participating as an actor in this cycle, starring in the movie Other People’s Children alongside Virginie Evira. Chiara Mastroianni, directed by his French compatriot Rybica Zlotowski.
