World Teachers’ Day is held annually on October 5 to celebrate all teachers around the world. The celebration is dedicated to the anniversary of the adoption of the 1966 ILO/UNESCO Recommendation on the Status of Teachers, which sets out standards relating to the rights and responsibilities of teachers, criteria for their initial preparation and further education, employment, and conditions for teaching and learning.
The Recommendation on the Status of Teachers in Higher Education was adopted in 1997 to complement the 1966 Recommendation that World Teachers’ Day is not only a day to celebrate how teachers are transforming education, but also to reflect on the support they need to fully spread their talents and profession, and to rethink how to develop the profession globally.
