“Al-Watan” contacted the British singer Salwa Lauren, who converted to Islam, released a video clip of the chant, coinciding with the celebrations of the Hijri New Year 1444, and had a special interview with her.

Who is Salwa Lauren?

I grew up in a village near London, UK, my family is not very religious, my mother died in 2018, when I was a child, I did not follow any religion before.

How did you get into the world of singing?

I had a talent for playing the piano and singing, so my mom and dad asked me if I wanted lessons, then I studied classical music, then jazz, I found myself somewhat in music, I was encouraged by my guides and professionals, I always write lyrics about life, and one day I turned into Songs.

You sang in front of Prince Charles .. How did the move come?

I was singing and playing the rhythms at the National Youth Jazz Orchestra of Great Britain, where I had the opportunity to sing to Prince Charles, who champions youth music, who praised my singing talent, my way of playing and singing.

Why did you decide to enter Islam? And what religion were you?

I did not follow any religion before, but I had studied the Bible, a little, as well as other religions, because I had so many unanswered questions, and wanted to know the purpose of life, that I read a little of the Qur’an on the Internet, motivated Curiosity, even touching something inside of me, was familiar and relevant, so I decided to convert to Islam.

What did you feel when you pronounced the two testimonies and declared your Islam?

When I announced that I wanted to be a Muslim, I felt the satisfaction of making a decision that improved my life, becoming my guide and mirror in life.

How did you learn prayer, ablution and Islamic religious rites?

Some women taught me how to pray, and they gave me a method to follow, I learned prayer by asking questions, and watching videos of the sheikhs on YouTube, and from them I learned all the fundamentals of the Islamic religion, I feel very comfortable, when I am in the hands of God Almighty, and mixed feelings at the time of hearing the call to prayer.

What is the Quranic verse or surah close to your heart?

The words of the Qur’an all touch my heart, but I fell in love with Surah No. 17 of the Holy Qur’an, which is Surat Al-Isra, especially verse 53, it is very relevant to my daily life, the tongue can become a weapon or a shield, and I always read it on a daily basis.

Do you memorize parts of the Holy Quran?

I take lessons to study the Quran, I have a great teacher, I memorized the verses of the Quran in Arabic, and many more in English, I study the Quran every day in an online question and answer session, where people gather to ask according to their situation in life, and everyone has the Quran open.

Is there a reader and sheikh whose voice you like when reading the Qur’an?

Many voices and senior sheikhs, I fall in love with their recitation of the Noble Qur’an, I always listen to Sheikh Muhammad Siddiq Al-Minshawi, as I adopt the recitation of the Qur’an behind him, so that I can learn its origins, rulings and recitation.

Have you visited the Kaaba?

I have never visited the Sacred House of God. I hope to experience that feeling. I want to spread peace and positivity with my words and actions.

You sang “The full moon came upon us”… How did you know her and memorize her words?

I was aware of the chant “The full moon has risen upon us”, because it is a famous Islamic anthem to welcome the Prophet Muhammad, may God bless him and grant him peace, when he arrived in Medina. He is a perfect example to teach us how to follow the Qur’an and the teachings of God. There is nothing wrong with the Qur’an, and I was able to memorize the words, and decided to share it in a video on my YouTube channel, I appreciate the need for halal entertainment, as an alternative for young people who would otherwise have watched anything and everything on it.

Has your life changed after converting to Islam?

Life has changed a lot, I used to live a normal life, and now I live a different life, I have a goal and focus on working for Islam and spreading it to the masses, God has given me everything and I want to return the favor. And what I need to work on, it has become my guide for life, I hope that everyone will enter Islam, and live under it, as I got all my answers from the Holy Quran.

Tell us about the step of wearing the hijab and appearing in it during an art competition?

When I read a verse in which God teaches us about the hijab, I realized that he only wants to give us an identity as Muslims, and protect us from harassment. Girls and women are very objectionable to selling things, and I want to send a message that you can be humble, remain successful, and share your talents and abilities in a positive light. So I decided to appear in him during one of the art competition programs, where she appeared as a judge on the talent show “ICStar”, to help the contestants by sharing the knowledge I learned along the way.

She sang “Tala’ Al-Badr Alina”, in cooperation with composer Hamed Badawi, and distributor Ihab Abdel Salam, and I filmed it on a theater and documented it during a video clip.
