Dressed in a white t-shirt and without handcuffs, Terry Oligny remained unmoved during his videoconference appearance at the Montreal courthouse, where he was charged with second degree murder of his spouse.

The 64-year-old man, with no criminal record, was arrested by the police on Saturday afternoon, on rue Dicaire, after a call from a neighbor worried that he could no longer see the victim.

On the spot, Donna Callahan, spouse of the accused, was found seriously injured in her house. His death was later pronounced in hospital.

The announcement of the death of the 69-year-old woman mourned the English school St. John’s in Saint-Jean-sur-Richelieu, where “Miss Donna”, as she was nicknamed there, worked for more than 20 years in daycare.

“Miss Donna’s untimely passing is a tragic loss to the community of St. Johns,” read an email sent to parents on Sunday by the school administration. Our hearts are broken. »

Retired since last year, Ms. Callahan continued to make replacements there to make up for the lack of personnel.

“She was a very nice lady and an icon of our school,” says Alexis Lanctôt, mother of two children attending St. John’s. Knowing that she was going through such things at home while smiling here is disturbing. »

Catherine Berger, Étienne Leduc, and their daughters Zoé and Coralie are saddened by the death of their neighbor. We see them here in front of the security perimeter surrounding the house where the tragedy is said to have taken place, on rue Dicaire in Saint-Jean-sur-Richelieu.

“The police had already intervened in their house about three years ago, recalls Catherine Berger, a resident of rue Dicaire for 12 years. The woman had been escorted by the police, but we were not asked any questions at that time. »

Contacted on this subject, the Sûreté du Québec could not confirm this information.

English-speaking, Donna Callahan spoke little to her neighbors, but she was described as “smiling” and “kind”.

“I’m shocked, because just last week we went walking together,” explains Emelie Gravel, who has lived on the street for five years. I went to walk my dogs every week with her. But we spoke little, because my English is not good. But I never could have imagined that she was going through this at home. »

This is the 14th feminicide to occur in Quebec since the beginning of the year.
